CALL TO SCULPTORS 2012

Castlegar Sculpturewalk is pleased to announce our 2012 Call to Artists
Sculpturewalk is an exciting exhibit of original sculptures displayed outdoors year-round in downtown Castlegar, British Columbia. Each yearCastlegar Sculpturewalk brings 25 original sculptures to the city supported by the Castlegar business community. The sculptures are placed on loan to the city for the entire year and are available for lease or purchase. At the end of each Sculpturewalk season, votes will be tallied for the People's Choice Award. The winner of this award will be purchased by the city as a legacy to be placed on permanent display. The winning People's Choice artist will receive a cash award of $15,000.00 Canadian and certificate.
All Sculptures will be judged for the Best of Show Award. This award will be based on artistic merit and creativity. The First and Second place Best of Show Award sculptors will receive a cash award of $3,000.00 CDN and $2,000.00 CDN respectively as well as a certificate..
Artists will qualify for sculpture pickup travel expense reimbursement if they are not participating in Sculpturewalk 2013 and have to make a special trip to Castlegar to pick up the 2012 sculpture(s). If artists are participating in Sculpturewalk 2012, they will be reimbursed for one trip to Castlegar for delivery of new piece(s) and pick up of previous years piece(s).
Sculpturewalk volunteers and welders will be available with the necessary equipment and manpower to help unload, place the artwork and secure it to the assigned pedestal or concrete pad.
All participating sculptors are encouraged, but not required, to be present during the installation of their sculpture(s) and at the Artists Reception. City leaders, site sponsors, Sculpturewalk board members, general members and other dignitaries will be invited to attend the Artist Reception. Artists who attend the May Artists Weekend are eligible for two nights free accommodation. JuryThe jury is comprised of visual artists and local business and community leaders. Entries will be critiqued on artistic merit, creativity, public safety, and for durability in an outdoor setting. All artists will be notified of the jury's decisions upon completion of the jurying process.
Sculpture Size Qualification Notice. Sculptures may be considered too small if less than 60cm height, but may be eligible if at least 15cm in width. The jury will make the decision.

CALL FOR ENTRIESSculpturewalk is open to professional and amateur sculptors of all backgrounds. Sculptors may submit up to four (4) of their own original (in concept, composition, and execution) sculptures and the entry fee per sculpture is $25.00. We welcome all sculptures at any valuation; however, those not willing to accept up to a maximum of $15,000.00 from the City as the purchase price for their sculpture will be excluded from the public voting for the People's Choice Award.
Sculpture Replication Notice Sculpturewalk will not accept sculpture entries that are identical to sculptures already placed, or to be placed in other similar public sculpture programs within 500 km of Castlegar. If a sculpture in this circumstance has already been placed for public display, then it will not be eligible for any Sculpturewalk awards.
A steel base plate or steel strips should be securely attached to the bottom of each piece(s) so they can be welded to a quartzite pedestal or concrete pad provided by Sculpturewalk. The plate/strips should be painted on top and bottom with a rust retardant flat white paint before attachment. All sculptures need to be made of a durable material for the yearlong outdoor setting and constructed with safety in mind for display in a public setting.

Please include this information with the application:
- Two high quality color photos or photos of scale model(s) of front and back of each sculpture entry.
- If you provide a sketch of your sculpture it must be accompanied with a photo of one or two of your original sculptures that show a good example of the quality of your work.
- Statement explaining the sculpture(s). Successful sculptures require a statement maximum 36 words to be placed on the sculpture pedestal.
