Serge Mozhnevsky

Coquitlam, BC

Serge Mozhnevsky was born in Russia and grew up in the Ukraine. He immigrated with his wife Lucy to Canada in 2000, ultimately settling in Coquitlam.

A talented sculptor in wood – he studied at Uzhgorod Professional College, graduating with an Honours Diploma in Wood Carving – bronze, and on occasion stone, Mozhnevsky’s work was displayed at exhibitions across Europe prior to moving to B.C. Now he works primarily in aluminum, particularly for his stylish public artworks.

He learned welding because, “to me, some of my pieces demanded a large scale.
Also, I like aluminum for the stark contrast between the sculptures and the green spaces they reside in. I’m Iike most sculptors, a variety of mediums keeps me from becoming complacent.”

His sculptures are always beautiful – sparse and uncluttered without the need for detail. Flowing, sometimes sharply angled or rounded lines and the effective use of open space tend to be prominent in everything he creates. Always, the emotional resonance of the artist is apparent in the abstraction.

“Detail is not something I consciously incorporate in my work,” he says. “But even in the simplest design, detail is found in the whole.” His work this year is in keeping with the always gorgeous, occasionally enigmatic pieces – six since Sculpturewalk’s inception – he has displayed here in the past.

Echo stands ten feet tall and as wide with a depth of four feet. With the exception of a triangular piece juxtaposed with one side of the base, it is one smooth flowing piece with different thicknesses meeting at an apex. From there, a continuation angles back and forth, wrapping underneath to create an open triangle above. It is a strong, profound work that expresses the power of art, presenting both emotion and beauty while the form unleashes the viewer’s imagination.
